Because the majority of businesses are unable to attend the STRA evening meetings, the FIRST Wednesday of the month has been designated as the date for the Business Wing of STRA to meet. The time is 10.30 am at the Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre (SNC) at 829 Harrow Road Sudbury HA0 2LP. Note: This time slot may be altered in exceptional cases.

A Heritage Business in Sudbury Celebrates 40 years on the High Street - 1976-2016
Christine Harvey, creator of Through the Looking Glass, Consultant Hairdressing Salon on the Watford Road, celebrated 40 years with a champagne reception. The Mayor, Councillor Parvez Ahmed, the leader of Brent Council Muhammed Butt, Barry Gardiner MP and his wife and many long standing clients and friends joined the celebration, including 91-year-old Joan who, since falling outside the shop, pops in occasionally for a cup of tea and a chat.
There have been many changes over the last 40 years particularly in hair styles. Joanna Lumley’s 1976 ‘Purdy’ bob which was cut for her role in ‘The Avengers’. A new Ford Fiesta cost £1,950, petrol was 77p a gallon - a loaf of bread was 19p - the temperature topped 28C (82F) for 22 days - computers were still in the future but this was the year that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started Apple. Concorde started flying from Heathrow to Bahrain - the first Body Shop opened in Brighton and at the cinema Sylvester Stallone captured everyone’s heart as the gutsy boxer Rocky.
Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister - the average wage was around £72.00 a week and only 50% of people had phones (landlines not mobiles) and no one had a computer. The Sex Pistols and Clash were topping the charts - Big Ben suffered internal damage and stopped for 9 months.
Christine is on STRA'S executive committee and part of the team who run the STRA Charity Christmas opera in aid of St Lukes Hospice at St. Andrews Church in Sudbury..the salon supports local charities with their time and space, whether it be asking people to donate their unwanted toiletry gifts for Caritas Bakhita House, a women’s refuge, or raising funds for a small blind club. Christine believes that one of the secrets of her success is to keep the business fresh by keeping up with the ever changing advances in hairdressing science.
Councillor Mary Daly, who has built up a rapport with Christine and the team at the salon, said "businesses on the high street often know the burning issues and concerns of local people". The team are passionate about their charity work and engaging with the community which Mary finds useful in her work as an elected local councillor.
